*This special bike tour is only available during the International Balloon Fiesta (first week in October)*
For nine days in October, the New Mexico skies are painted with all colors of the rainbow as hundreds of balloons lift off from Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta Park.
Nothing rivals the power of Mass Ascension on crisp early mornings as these graceful giants leave the ground to take their place in the cerulean desert sky.
For ballooning fans worldwide, the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is a pilgrimage.
There’s something for everyone to enjoy . . . whimsical special shapes filled with equal parts of hot air and wonder, and Balloon Glows that create a magical night landscape for spectators to wander.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta will leave you awestruck and wanting more.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a world-renowned attraction and destination for adults and kids alike.
For over three decades, the first week in October has been linked to the smell of roasting chiles and a beautiful, magical moving picture show of hot air balloons sailing silently through the crisp fall air.
Guests from all over the world gather in Albuquerque to celebrate hot-air ballooning where literally hundreds of balloons will take flight from the Balloon Fiesta Park this year.
From its modest beginnings in 1972 with 13 balloons launched from a shopping mall parking lot, the Balloon Fiesta has grown to multiple events and year-round launches at the custom-designed, 365-acre Balloon Fiesta Park.
Albuquerque’s signature event is Balloon Fiesta—which, with 700 balloons, is the largest ballooning event on earth, the most photographed event on earth, and the largest annual international event held in the United States.
Imagine 54 football fields, all put together. That’s the size of Balloon Fiesta Park’s 78-acre launch field! And at this Park’s “playing field,” there are no losing teams and no viewing stands. Guests walk the field and are part of the action.
Come be a part of the hundreds of thousands of smiling upturned faces, awestruck by the spectacular beauty of hot air balloons filling the vast blue New Mexico sky.
Routes ‘Bikes & Balloons’ Tour Reaches New Heights in 2013
Join us on our third annual Routes Bicycle Rentals & Tours ‘Bikes & Balloons’ Tour for an unparalleled experience that includes a unique, scenic bicycle ride through lavender fields and Cottonwood trees along the historic Rio Grande River, complimentary front-door bicycle valet service, admission to the Balloon Fiesta Park, a pair of hand warmer packets, farm-fresh breakfast options, and more!
This year Routes breaks new ground by announcing their collaboration with one of Fodor’s ‘Top 100 Hotels in the World’, Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm. Set amongst 25 acres of lavender fields and lush gardens, the award-winning Los Poblanos Inn is one of the most prestigious historic properties in the Southwest. Designed in 1932 by famed architect John Gaw Meem, the “Father of Santa Fe Style,” the buildings feature agricultural-themed artwork by important New Mexico artists of the period.
Tour Guests arrive at and begin their adventure from Los Poblanos, pedaling along the famous Rio Grande River Trail toward the Balloon Fiesta Park. Riders will have a unique opportunity to view the early morning Dawn Patrol (weather testing) hot-air balloons from the bike trail, witnessing an impressive aerial light show seldom experienced by visitors.
By participating in our signature bike tour, you will also have a distinct advantage over commuters traveling by automobile.
Since crowds for the daily events often exceed 100,000 people, those who commute by car often miss viewing the Mass Balloon Ascension from the field due to the enormously long lines of vehicles arriving at the same time, all waiting to park and walk down to the Balloon Fiesta Park. Wait times by automobile have been known to take over two hours to reach the park entrance at a cost of $10 per car, per day.
Travelers on our ‘Bikes & Balloons’ Tour ride directly to the front gates of the park, leaving our signature bicycles with a Routes team member and BikeABQ’s valet storage service.
At the conclusion of the morning events, participants will experience the striking autumn colors of New Mexico along the Rio Grande and enjoy an optional guided tour of Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm. The property features historic gardens and architecture, fountains, ponds, a wide range of livestock (including chickens and albino peacocks), and organic lavender fields.
‘Bikes and Balloons’ may be customized with a number of amenities including a healthy farm-fresh breakfast from the Los Poblanos Chef (served by Routes at Balloon Fiesta Park for you to enjoy during the Mass Ascension), room packages at Los Poblanos Inn (*), and extended bicycle rentals. Complimentary parking at Los Poblanos is available for all Routes tour participants.
