It’s National Margarita Day (no, really – it’s real) and we wanted to share some of our top local spots in ABQ to grab one of our favorite drinks!
- ChileRio on Pan American Fwy has some pretty amazing flavors, our picks are the Silver Coin and the unique Coconut marg.
- El Patron New Mexican Restaurant in NE Heights also makes a killer house margarita (their Casa de Patron).
- And last but not least, Church Street Cafe right here in Old Town has one tasty Agave Margarita.
There’s a lot of debate regarding the birth of the Margarita, but being a bit bias, I choose to believe the New Mexican connection 😉

One slow afternoon, Don Carlos was experimenting with mixing new drinks when a prestigious visitor arrived: Margarita Henkel, the daughter of a German ambassador, who lived with her husband Roy Parodi near the city in Rancho Hamilton. Don Carlos offered the drink to Margarita, and named it after her for being the first person to taste it.
He concocted a mixture of equal parts tequila, orange liqueur( false) and lime, served over ice in a salt-rimmed glass. However, Don Carlos’ recipe was made with Damiana Liqueur, not Cointreau orange liqueur. He may have named his drink after Margarita Henkle, but it is not the drink the world enjoys today.
